Simon Duran Castelán

May 16, 1965 - June 11, 2021

Simon Duran Castelán, El Chaparrito de Oro, was born in Veracruz, Mexico on May 16, 1965. A son to humble parents, Simon was a joyful boy with dreams of championing life as is the way of Mexican culture. With 5 brothers and 3 sisters, he grew up in a large family full of love and strength to help him face the beauty of life. Growing up in Mexico City, Simon was a good boy, studious, and took refuge in the Mexico City police academy. After the 1985 earthquake where Simon humbly helped rescue people trapped in the rubble of the city, he decided to continue his march to the United States where he was later accompanied by his brother Miguel and sister Rosa. A few years after living in Los Angeles, California, Simon met his first wife, Amelia, with whom they gave birth to a boy, Christopher, and a pair of twins, Brenda and Briana. Simon was a man of curiosity and spiritual yearning who always sought growth so that he could learn how to use his bestowed life tools. His innate ability to bring to life any project that he set his mind to would come to fruition through his hard work and confident ability to triumph all of his goals. His joy attracted the people around him and there was also a time where El Chaparrito de Oro helped light smiles to thousands of people through the radio as an announcer in the mornings. He was no stranger to the microphone and loved to sing and use his voice to cheer people up. There isn’t a time where El Chaparrito de Oro forgot his roots, nor the importance of what it is to be Mexican and to have Latino pride. El Chaparrito de Oro found refuge and spiritual peace in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. With his entire family in mind, his heart, and all of his spirit, El Chaparrito de Oro praised God even through the trepidations faced. Before resting in peace, El Chaparrito de Oro married his wife, Viola, to once again plant the seeds of a home. God gifted him with the blessing of a grandfather and provided him with the continued blessing to father his grandson, Cartier. He taught him that love is eternal and that there will always be opportunities to share the gifts of compassion and forgiveness, especially within the family. The life of Simon Duran Castelán is a testimony to the world that one can have goals in mind and realize their dreams through love and the effort to continue the march forward despite the obstacles that may arise in life. Like all that it is to be Latino, in Love all is possible.
