Jim and Carla were good neighbors to us up here on Crestview Drive when we built our home in 1993, They were among the first of welcoming neighbors. We appreciated Jim's seasoned advice about dealing with snow when we first moved here and enjoyed his many drive-by visits over the years. We too thought Carla left us entirely too early. Jim was instrumental in helping us to defeat a proposed cell tower in our back yard for which we are forever grateful. We also enjoyed the all too infrequent visits at Emeritus while David's sister, Mary Ann, was a resident there. Those visits confirmed that Jim was indeed a talker, but he had many good stories to share. Good neighbors are what help to provide meaningful and memorable life stories and Jim certainly contributed to ours. We will name the next bear caught in our beehives in memory of Jim.

In December 1967 I completed a six-month training program in Cleveland, OH, and received my first field assignment to Columbus, OH as a Reliance Sales Engineer. Jim was the senior salesman resident in Columbus and working out of the Dayton district sales office.
When I arrived Jim and Carla insisted I come over for a family dinner diner with their three young sons, Jeff, Tom, and Dave. That was the start of over a 50-year enduring friendship. Jim was my mentor and coach for those initial eight months prior to my enlistment. He drove me to the airport and wished me well with a hug and a tear in his eye.
As luck would have it the AF assigned me to Lockbourne AFB just south of Columbus. Again, Jim and Carla had me and Bonnie over for dinner to celebrate. That spring Jim toasted us at our wedding with love and warmth.
I learned through Jim’s example that peers and customers need not be best friends, but it was essential you earned their respect for your honesty, keeping commitments, and listening. Selling internally Jim would push plant and product managers to do the right thing. He taught me you never attack or embarrass the individual, you offer to solicit their help to resolve the issue or problem.
Jim embodied everything Reliance and Dodge represented… integrity, drive, innovation, responsiveness, and loyalty. He cherished his friendships and enjoyed life to the fullest. You enjoyed his stories and jokes no matter how many times you heard them. It was an honor to join with him to celebrate, laugh, work, and on some occasions cry.
“There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sail the seas. But the best ships are friendships, and may they always be.” RIP my friend.

A visit to Jim's mountain home was always a relaxing and joyful time. He was the consummate host on Crestview Drive and kept the fire and stories rolling on throughout the stormy winter nights. His quick wit and funny jokes, especially on the fishing boat trolling for Alaska King salmon, made the time pass ever so quickly between the bite. "Farming the fish off," or losing a fish due to your poor netting skills was a quick way to become immortalized in Jim's jokes for the rest of the fishing day. Needless to say, one worked extra hard to make sure Jim's fish landed in the net and in the boat.

Dear Papa, We hope you are catching lots of fish and your fishing buddy doesn't "farm it off"!

I grew up with the hunt family in Summit Park and was friends with Dave, Tom, and Jeff throughout my childhood and beyond. Jim was always a very nice man and treated us all as if we were grown adults. Great family. Many good memories of the weekly poker games. My prayers go out to the Hunt men and their families. Your Dad was wonderful. L loved your parents. They were so encouraging of my efforts to fix our water system in Summit Park. I had to cross their front deck to get to my Well #1 every day for a few years. Your Dad was so kind, very smart and understanding. We would have breakfast when my Mom would come in town and he would tell us about so many fun stories. He was so adventurous and had a full life. I truly loved him. He was so proud of all of you in his family. He will be greatly missed. We all need to pass along his kindness and twinkle in his smile and eyes. He was a gift to us in Summit Park that had the privilege to know him and your wonderful Mom. She was a pillar in our Schools in Park City. My kids had her as the Principle in TMMS. Blessings to your family...
