James Clayton Roper's Obituary
James Clayton “Clay” Roper, 59, passed away on March 9, 2026, following a lifelong battle with diabetes. Clay was born on June 21, 1966, in Niceville, Florida, and grew up in Valdosta, Georgia, before eventually making Salt Lake City, Utah, the place he proudly called home.
Clay was known for his sharp wit, his charm, and the unmistakable spark he carried into every room. A true jack‑of‑all‑trades, Clay worked in many fields throughout his life, spending time as a long-haul truck driver, and excavator but he found his true calling as a plumber and built his own business which brought him immense pride.
A true country boy at heart, he felt most at home under an open sky, surrounded by the simple things he loved. He had a lifelong bond with dogs, and they were often right by his side — loyal companions who matched his big personality.
He loved the outdoors and felt most at peace in the mountains, where he spent countless days hunting, fishing, and appreciating the beauty around him. He loved his Dallas Cowboys almost as much as he loved his chocolate, cooking out on the grill and talking about politics.
He is survived by his beloved daughters Ashley Roper and Morgan Roper, and by his cherished grandchildren. Clay is also survived by his sister Lisa Roper, his grandmother Henrietta Traynor, his step‑father James Colvin, his nephews Christopher and Michael Buckingham and his niece Cheyenne Roper.
Clay was preceded in death by his mother Shirley Ann Colvin, his father Richard Wesley Roper, Sr., his brother Richard Wesley Roper, Jr., and his grandparents James and Ruby Traynor.
The family would like to express their love and appreciation to his previous wife Christie Garcia. Though they divorced, Christie, along with her husband Ben, lovingly cared for Clay during the final years of his life.
The family would also like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Pine Creek nursing home for the care, kindness, and dignity they provided Clay during final months.
Clay’s absence leaves a space that cannot be filled. His laughter, his charm, his stubborn determination, and the way he loved will be missed more than words can express.
“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day.”
Private family services will be held at a later date.
