Robert Morgan "Bob" Brooks' Obituary
Robert Morgan “Bob” Brooks, beloved father, grandfather, and friend passed away on October 24 at his daughter’s home in Salt Lake. He was born January 5, 1938 in Freeport, Texas to Dugal and Velma Brooks. He grew up in southern Texas and southern Louisiana before heading to Louisiana State University where he earned both his bachelors degree and his doctorate degree in mathematics. He also met and married Jackye Bergemeyer, his wife of 45 years who passed away in 2006. He taught at LSU and the University of Minnesota for several years before moving to Salt Lake to take a teaching position in the mathematics department at the University of Utah. He became a full professor in the department and remained there for 51 years until his retirement in 2018. In Utah, he and Jackye raised their three children. They also spent two years living and working in Mexico. He is survived by his children, Michael Brooks of York, Pennsylvania; Ian Brooks (Mary) of Baltimore, Maryland; Kristin van Brunt (Jeff) of Salt Lake; foster daughter, Buu Diep (Alan Michelsen) of Salt Lake City; and seven grandchildren. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, October 30, 11:30 am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, 1975 South 2300 East. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Virginia (1208 Arch Bishop Lefebvre Ave., Dillwyn, VA 23936) or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
