Wilfred Orlando Martinez's Obituary
Wilfred Orlando Martinez passed away peacefully in his sleep on September 5th 2023 early in
the morning at 83 years old. Born January 29th 1940 in Trujillo, CO to Maria (Archuleta) and
Lucas Martinez. Wilfred was the 2nd youngest of ten children. He graduated from Bayfield High
school and soon married his beautiful wife Mary Ann (Vialpondo), on June 22,1958. Together
they raised three strong children together; Rick, Robert, and Kim, who later grew their own
families, adding six grand-children and thirteen great-grandchildren. He loved and adored his
family with all his heart.
Wilfred and his family left Colorado and began his career in Salt Lake City as a Meter Mechanic.
He was recognized by the city for his hard work over his 30-year career. Wilfred loved working
the meters in his final days before he retired, but enjoyed the benefits of retirement to the fullest;
like his daily coffee outings with his brother in law Bennie.
Wilfred wore many hats. Aside from his recent favorite, “Purride” kitten hat that he wore around
town, he was also a Father, Grandfather, Grandpa the Great, Tio, brother, cousin and friend. He
cherished the time he got to spend with family; especially his mi hitos and mi hitas. He lit up
when he’d get to visit with his grandkids and family. He would often greet you with “Hi Mi
hita/hito!” followed by a little giggle. He was so proud of his family and had a great knowledge of
everyone in it. Wilfred had a special love for the Martinez/Archuletta family reunions and
enjoyed reminiscing about the good times that had passed. He wanted to ensure that his kids
and grandkids knew the importance of family and to always put each other first.
He loved singing and playing songs on his guitar and never turned down a homemade meal.
Chili verde, tamales, and sweet rice were some of his favorites, especially if they were made by
his wife.
Wilfred was a friendly guy and loved making people laugh. His jokes always gave you full belly
laughs that hurt into the next day. We will miss his sweet smile, his overfilled shirt pocket, his
funny (and wildly inappropriate) jokes, and his comforting whistle when times are quiet.
Wilfred is survived by his son Rick (Geri) Martinez, his grandchildren, great grandchildren,
brother Moises and his sister Dolores. We are comforted that he is finally able to reunite with his
sweetheart Mary Ann, his son and daughter, his parents, and his brothers and sisters; all of
whom he missed greatly. What a reunion there was to be had in heaven waiting for him.
Services will be held on Friday, October 27th, 2023 at St. Anns Catholic Church located at 430
E. 2100 S. SLC, UT. A gathering with the friends and family of Wilfred will be held starting at
10:45 am, followed by the Rosary at 11:30 am which will lead into Mass at 12:00 pm. Please
join us in celebrating Wilfred’s life at the luncheon following mass, in the cafeteria of the school
house next door, approximately 1:00 pm.
We would like to thank St. Joseph's Villa and Symbii Home Health and Hospice staff for giving
such great care to Wilfred during his time in need.
