Cher and I are still in shock. We're neighbors and we bowled with Charlie for years. We met up with him regularly, particularly over the last few months, at Sandy All Star on Tuesdays and Fridays for coffee and sometimes a beer. We didn't know Dale, but know he was heartbroken over losing her, and lately, his grief was intensified losing their dog of many years, Frankie. We would stop by and sometimes bring cookies to see Charlie and Frankie and it just hasn't been the same. He liked to say that with all his many sports channels his time was pretty much full; we wished we could have done more. We almost got him to join Larry and I in our guitar class and to come back to sub in bowling, but in retrospect we know that his health was worse than we knew. Charlie was a bright spot in our lives. He never failed to stop his truck when passing our house to say hi and chat. We loved his stories about playing defensive back with the Maryland Terps and being in the protective service with CID on the Ted Kennedy detail, etc. Two weeks we had a poetry reading of poems from Vietnam experiences and try as I could, I couldn't get Charlie to come. There were things he experienced that he had to keep inside. I love the guy and hope he's in a good place reunited with Dale, Frankie and those he loved.
